Inuvika Announces the Release of OVD Enterprise 3.4 with the ability to provision VMs on any hypervisor or cloud platform

Toronto, Canada – Inuvika released OVD Enterprise 3.4 today, with a host of new features that make our software more scalable and easier to deploy and manage.

Provisioning

Inuvika has added the ability to integrate your OVD Session Manager directly with your choice of virtualization platform. This can be on-premises, cloud-based or hybrid utilizing both simple hypervisors, such as Proxmox, Nutanix AHV, VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V as well as cloud providers such as Zadara, Openstack, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon AWS.

This new functionality allows you to deploy both shared and dedicated OVD Application Server instances that run either Windows 10/11, Windows Server, or a Linux Server based operating system (Ubuntu 22.04/RHEL8) from a gold master template or multiple templates curated for different use cases. You can spin up and spin down on demand and also have the ability to set a working hours schedule where required.

Monitoring

A new monitoring feature has been added allowing you to connect the OVD Administration Console directly to a monitoring platform supporting InfluxDB, such as Grafana

Multitenant Changes

Global view has been removed in this release. It is replaced by new drop downs for multi-tenant or global administrators on various pages to allow them to filter information displayed by tenant

Other changes in this release include changes to Service Notices, Software License Enforcement and cosmetic changes to the admin console and a new security feature that provides immediate protection against brute force login attacks on your OVD environment.

Inuvika Announces the Release of OVD Enterprise 3.1 with Premium USB Device Redirection

Toronto, Canada – Inuvika released OVD Enterprise 3.1, featuring premium USB device redirection support, additional options for authenticating via Two-Factor Authentication, seamless clipboard capability when using a Web browser, and updates to the Inuvika Mobile and Desktop Clients.  The Enterprise Mobile Clients for iOS and Android include updated interfaces with a new top menu bar, enhanced multi-touch support, updated RemoteFX support, and new in-session setting options.  OVD 3.1 also includes maintenance fixes and various backend improvements that increase performance and improve stability.

For a complete summary of features and updates, read the OVD 3.1 Release Notes summary.

Premium USB Device Redirection

Premium USB Device Redirection support allows you to use a much wider variety of USB devices with your remote OVD Windows sessions.

What makes this possible?  We have integrated FabulaTech’s leading solution for virtualized applications and desktops into OVD Enterprise 3.1.  OVD users can redirect any device* when accessing remote Windows desktops and applications using the Enterprise Desktop Client for Mac, Windows, Linux, and Stratodesk NoTouch OS for thin clients.

FabulaTech is the leading provider of device redirection solutions for remote desktop sessions.  Inuvika worked closely with their engineering team to enable our customers to use any USB device within their OVD virtual workspace session.  Device redirection supports Windows remote environments and is incredibly easy to use.  In fact, it doesn’t require the installation of device drivers on the user’s local machine or thin client. Auto-redirection also ensures that hot-plugged devices are automatically redirected without any manual intervention on the user’s part.

For example, imagine you work in a hospital environment that requires biometric authentication before you can access the hospital’s EMR system and patient data.

  1. When first installing the Inuvika EDC on your local device, make sure the Premium Device Redirection option is pre-checked in the dialog box.
  2. Before launching a new OVD session, physically connect your biometric fingerprint reader to your laptop or thin client device.
  3. Launch your OVD session. Your biometric device will automatically redirect to the remote server and is ready to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which OS platforms are supported?

Premium USB Device Redirection is available when using the Inuvika EDC for Windows, Linux, macOS, or Stratodesk NoTouch OS thin client devices.

What USB devices are supported?

Any* USB device that permits redirection and has driver support for Windows remote desktop and application sessions.  Some vendors restrict or block redirection, so please consult with your intended device’s manufacturer to confirm it will support redirection.

Examples of devices include:

  • Fingerprint readers
  • Eye scanners
  • Smartcard readers
  • Signature pads
  • Webcams
  • Scanners
  • Label printers
  • Barcode readers
  • High-resolution audio devices

Is redirection secure?

Yes.  Redirection between the user’s local USB device and the OVD Windows Application server is established using encrypted “virtual channels.”

If more than one user is logged into a shared remote desktop session, each redirected device is isolated within its own session stream.  In addition, each user can only see their own devices within the remote session, so they cannot connect to devices that do not belong to them.

OVD Enterprise 3.0 announcement

OVD Enterprise 3.0 introduces new features designed to make the app virtualization user experience even better.

Toronto, Canada – Inuvika today released OVD Enterprise 3.0, with new features and designs that focus on the user experience.  Version 3.0 is Inuvika’s most significant release of OVD Enterprise ever.  It introduces Resource Container, an easy way to customize user environments by managing available RAM and CPU resources. OVD’s updated messaging feature, Service Notices, adds a new option for broadcasting information to users both before and after they log into their OVD sessions.  User Shadowing gives administrators the ability to troubleshoot issues that users may encounter by remotely observing their active OVD sessions.  OVD 3.0 also extends multi-monitor support to Application Mode users for a more flexible way to manage multiple Windows applications simultaneously.  New options for using Linux applications within a Microsoft Domain environment are also included, along with performance and stability maintenance improvements.

Internal Two Factor Authentication

Two Factor Authentication is now integrated into OVD Enterprise 3.0.  In addition to Inuvika’s continued support for external ** SAML-based solution providers like Watchguard and Duo, Inuvika now offers security administrators an internal option.  Two Factor Authentication adds a critical third component to user verification that identity thieves cannot access. It uses the new Inuvika Authenticator app for iOS and Android devices to generate a unique verification code that users must enter along with their user name and password.  Even if another individual has an OVD user’s name and password, they will not be able to access their account without the verification code.

Additional security measures include a new self-service password management portal and password expiry detection that helps users and administrators maintain good password management practices and compliance standards.

Inuvika CEO Kevin Gallagher:  “OVD Enterprise 3.0 is a major update that advances Inuvika’s focus on making application virtualization easy. It’s our biggest release yet.  Our approach with 3.0 takes an already-great user experience and makes it even better.  With new security features like integrated Two Factor Authentication, new user performance optimization, and better ways to work with Windows and Linux applications, we think our customers are going to love the experience that OVD Enterprise 3.0 offers.

What is Multi-Tenancy?

You may have come across the term “Multi-Tenancy” related to Information Technology. What exactly does it mean and what does it do?

Simply put, “Multi-Tenancy” is a term used to describe an architecture in which a single installation of software, or service, is used to deliver services to multiple, autonomous organizations. Each organization is referred to as a “tenant.”

If you picture what usually comes to mind when hearing the word “tenant,” someone who rents an apartment in a building, the comparison is not dissimilar.

Let’s consider the comparison for a moment. Imagine an apartment building and the tenants living within it. You have one large building, sub-divided into apartments. There are common areas like the front door, hallways, and perhaps laundry facilities. Electricity, gas, and water services are delivered to the building as a whole, and then sub delivered to each apartment.

Aside from the common areas, each tenant has their own private living space. Unless you invite your neighbor over, tenants cannot enter each other’s living spaces. At the same time though, they all make use of shared resources provided by the landlord, such as the utilities and other services. Rather than purchasing their own separate houses, tenants pay to use portions of pooled resources in the form of an apartment and all the other shared services that come with it.

So, how does this apply to Information Technology?

What's New in OVD 2.7 multi-tenancy support

Deliver Virtualized App and Desktop Services

OVD Enterprise 2.7 introduces support for multi-tenant deployments.

As in the apartment building comparison, a single instance of OVD Enterprise can be used to deliver virtualized apps and desktops to multiple tenants. OVD is the equivalent to the apartment building in our previous example. In addition to the OVD server farm, other resources like file servers and directory services can be pooled together and shared.

Security Considerations in Multi-Tenancy

Security is a significant consideration within a multi-tenant environment.

Today, your corporate data is your most valuable asset. Depending on your type of business or industry you are in, you may have to adhere to strict regulatory compliance laws related to data privacy. Healthcare and financial services are two quick examples of heavily-regulated industries.

With OVD, tenants are isolated (or siloed) from one another, securing their data. As in our apartment building example, OVD tenants can make use of shared resources (such as storage servers, security gateways, Web access servers, and more) but at the end of the day, keep their data secured within their own locked apartment. Each tenant within OVD essentially has their compartmentalized instance of OVD, complete with a dedicated administrator. No tenant, unless specially configured to do so, can access another tenant’s data.

OVD permits additional granular user policy control that further restricts user activity on the tenant level itself. Administrators limit who can access data and what they may do with it (such as copy/paste, print, connect USB devices, or download to their local device.)

Benefits of Multi-Tenancy

The primary benefit of multi-tenancy is the ability to consolidate resources and maximize the use of IT investments. Rather than deploy and manage dedicated systems, data center resources can now be pooled together and shared across multiple AD domains (along with their costs.)

Additional benefits include:

• Improved IT efficiencies by reducing duplication
• Lower costs over time
• Streamlined management by focusing on one shared environment, not multiple disparate systems
• Faster rollout of new services to customers

Use Cases

OVD Enterprise allows any organization to deliver virtualized Windows and Linux applications and desktops to various platforms. OVD supports delivery to Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome, thin clients and client-less HTML 5 browser-based devices. It can be installed as an on-premise solution, or delivered as a service through one of Inuvika’s global network of Managed Service Provider (MSPs) partners.

Managed Services Providers

As a Multi-Tenant ready solution, OVD Enterprise is well-suited to help MSPs maximize their data center resources and drive new service revenue. They can use one instance of OVD Enterprise, together with other shared data center services, to deliver customized apps and desktops as a service to multiple organizations. All without having to manage dedicated environments for each.

Multi-Branch Organizations

OVD is also well-suited in organizations with multiple branches, divisions, or distinct lines of business. These organizations may wish to deliver services to several autonomous divisions from one centralized IT center, yet still isolate them from one another and manage them as a whole.

For example:

• Commercial enterprises with independent subsidiaries or subdivisions.
• Regional school boards or Hi-Ed institutions with multiple campuses
• Government and other public sector institutions with separate departments or divisions
• Organizations with unique security needs that require isolation of teams or identified groups of users

Building for scalability, performance and user experience.

Roy Heaton CTO

1 Feb 2016

Since the initial launch of Inuvika OVD Enterprise in April 2015, our development focus has been on performance, scalability, management and user experience. We have made significant improvements in the platform in the last year.  OVD had been developed over seven years as an open source product. The original development team joined Inuvika in order to make the improvements required for marketability.  Inuvika has made a large investment in additional engineering resources.  The result has been early successes with OVD being used in both education and healthcare, where access to both Windows and Linux apps is a requirement.

Let’s take a look at some of the advances up to our latest V1.4 release made available on January 29, 2016.

Improving platform performance, scale and management

With the launch of our initial release, our top priorities were to improve performance, stability of the platform and simplicity of system administration.  The first goal was application server support for the latest Windows platforms and native 64 bit support for Linux LTS distributions. OVD now ships with support for Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2008 R2 application servers to support the latest Windows application requirements. Native support for Ubuntu 14.04, CentOS and RHEL 6 / 7 64 bit platforms was also introduced.  With native 64-bit Linux implementations, a ‘chroot’ed’ environment is no longer required. To the admin, the biggest advantage is the removal of manual package management and all that entails. Now, all required packages and package updates are taken directly from the relevant platform distribution sources.  Additionally, as OVD runs all of its core services on Linux, native 64 bit execution significantly improves overall performance and scalability of the platform.

We also introduced high availability for the File Server component which now supports an active-passive architecture and automatic failover. This means that  existing sessions will continue to run normally in the event of a file server outage.  Access to shared folders will be temporarily suspended during a failover, but no data will be lost.  Additionally, the introduction of External Data Storage mapping provides Administrators with greater control over access to storage within the OVD environment.

Making the most of app license assets

One of the benefits of moving to a virtual application environment is better management of your application assets through centralized management and control.  However, knowing who is using which applications and how they are consuming licenses is key to optimizing software costs. To help, Inuvika has introduced application license management.  This provides insight into published application usage by tracking usage by user, user group, server and the amount of time an application was active. Detailed reports by application, user, groups or server are available to identify licensing needs and report on current license availability.  With notifications based on configured license threshold levels or expiry dates, IT can proactively manage application delivery capacity, their license requirements and track consumption to ensure compliance.

HTML5 – works everywhere, zero client footprint.

Many of our customers use HTML5 clients as a widely accessible, mobile friendly, way for their users to access applications and desktops. HTML5 browsers are pretty ubiquitous, we find them on devices ranging from tablets and smartphones to Google Chromebooks and laptop PCs. They offer a simpler approach for both IT and end users because any device that has an HTML5 compliant browser has ‘zero install’ connectivity to an Inuvika server farm. Not only does this allow ubiquitous yet secure access, it also provides administrators with an alternative to having Java on client devices. With HTML being the language of the web, HTML5 based clients are a core development platform for Inuvika with our focus on performance and user experience improvements.

HTML5 and WebSockets

Release of OVD V1.3 saw the implementation of Guacamole 0.9.7, the support of WebSockets and much improved RDP translation for HTML5 connections.  WebSockets (now the default communication mechanism) delivers full-duplex communication for connections. Importantly, and in contrast to HTTP’s requirement for multiple TCP connections, WebSockets requires a single TCP connection resulting in improved network utilization and user display experience. This, along with improved RDP translation capabilities, has also reduced server CPU resource and bandwidth requirements delivering better scaling.

It’s all about user experience

With virtual apps and desktops, it is important to deliver a consistent and rich experience for users, apps and desktop sessions.  It should be seamless and appear as though they were delivered locally.

The latest releases have brought a number of user experience improvements for HTML5 connected sessions:

  • disk redirection enables the upload and download of files to and from client side storage devices to server side application sessions
  • audio support provides audio out capabilities to HTML5 client connections
  • access to locally connected printers is available through PDF file printing
  • RDP settings support font smoothing and Windows Desktop background

All client connections now benefit from:

  • Automated Session Recovery – this provides automatic reconnection of desktop and seamless application sessions that have been disconnected intentionally or due to network drop out.
  • Session Roaming – provides the ability to reconnect sessions from a different client device allowing users to move from one location to another or switch from one device to another.

Authentication and sign-on

While security remains a top concern for our customers, so does ease of use and a seamless experience for their users. We continue to extend our support for authentication mechanisms and federated single sign-on.  The latest release provide support for:

  • CAS authentication – allows an admin to use a CAS single sign-on server for OVD
  • Windows domain single sign-on with Kerberos – enables single sign-on to OVD from a Windows client in an Active Directory domain.  Users only need to login to the client machine in the domain and the credentials will be used to authenticate the OVD session.
  • SAML 2.0 authentication support – A user that accesses OVD using a web browser can be authenticated through federated single sign-on using a SAML 2.0 Identity Provider.  The user only needs to sign-on once to the Identity Provider to gain access to systems.

Let us know what you think.

So that’s the round-up. There have been many other defect fixes and system reliability improvements, alongside the major updates and feature additions we’ve talked about, to make OVD the enterprise class platform that it is today.  We’re committed to deliver cost efficient, secure and simple to manage open source technology for app delivery.  If there’s something you’d like to see in OVD or you have any other suggestions drop us a line at [email protected] .
